Black Midnight and Small Business Saturday

Nov 7, 2011

Add a new term to the holiday shopping season lexicon: "Black Midnight." A number of retailers will open on midnight after Thanksgiving giving shoppers a chance to burn off some of that turkey and mashed potatoes while checking a few things off their shopping lists.

Market research firm Lab42 surveyed social media users to find out what they expect to do for the holiday shopping season. Their unscientific poll found 38% already started their shopping, 69% plan to shop on Black Friday, and 52% plan to shop on Cyber Monday. Below the fold is an infographic they made from their data.

Lab42 forgot to ask about Small Business Saturday, November 26 this year. Created by American Express last year, this national initiative marks a day to support the local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods around the country.

As an alternative to staying up late on Thanksgiving night or getting up at the crack of dawn to hit the mall on Friday morning, shoppers can support local businesses on Small Business Saturday.

If you are a small business owner, check out the Small Business Saturday Facebook page for marketing tools and ideas.
