Health Care: Spiraling Costs - Spiraling Opposition

Jul 17, 2009

Health care. Just as Democrats began building up a head of steam toward passage of their health care plans, the Congressional Budget Office is letting some of the air out. CBO Director Douglas Elmendorf said the legislation would not rein in spiraling health care costs and, at least initially, isn't likely to significantly lower premiums for the majority of Americans with employer-sponsored health insurance. Elmendorf said the bill would dramatically worsen the nation’s fiscal health.

And more bad news for proponents of the House bill … Blue Dog leader Mike Ross said the House plan is losing support and will be stuck in committee without changes. "Last time I checked, it takes seven Democrats to stop a bill in the Energy and Commerce Committee. We had seven against it last Friday; we have 10 today."

Speaker Pelosi said she might be willing to lower the surtax on high-income individuals if other savings can be found to offset it. She did say that either way the rich are gonna get it.

On the Senate side, Max Baucus said President Obama's opposition to taxing employer-provided health benefits wasn’t helping matters.

Even the Washington Post wondered why the president was cheering a bill that can’t reasonably be paid for and doesn’t reduce the bend on upward health care spending.

All in all, this Rep. Pete Hoekstra sums it up quite well on Twitter:

"Its 4 am. In committee marking up health care reform. This is ridiculous."
