This Startup’s App Helps Students Find Scholarships to Fund Their College Dreams

Christopher Gray is on a personal crusade to help low-income students find the scholarship money they need to make their college dreams come true. Raised by a single mother in Birmingham, Alabama, the young entrepreneur grew up in poverty during the height of the Great Recession. He desperately wanted to go to college, but he couldn’t afford to, not without financial aid. @Scholly5 @ABCSharkTank episode re-run this Friday! Make sure you tune in! 🙂 #sharkfight pic.twitter.com/oiBV0WMzGZ — Christopher Gray (@cgray91) June 28, 2015 With little other choice, he set out to secure as many scholarships as possible. He struggled for seven months to find and apply for enough scholarships to fund four years of college, not to mention living expenses, all while attending high school. This Startup’s High-Tech Bottle Will Tell You Whether Your Water is Safe to Drink

When environmental engineer Eric Li launched his first invention on crowdfunding site Kickstarter, he didn’t expect money to pour in from backers so quickly. In just 12 hours, his crowdfunding campaign for Ecomo, a “smart” bottle that filters and tests water — literally with a twist — was fully funded. The campaign sailed past its modest $50,000 goal and is now nearing a $237,000 haul, with upwards of 1,200 backers and climbing. There are still 25 days to go in the funding cycle. “I thought we would reach our goal, but not even close to this fast,” he tells Free Enterprise. The first-time entrepreneur’s ambitious mission, as he describes it, is to “provide everyone in the world concerned with the safety of their drinking water a convenient, portable tool with which to test and purify their water at any time, anywhere – whether they’re hiking, running or working in the […]

This App Is Good For Your (Financial) Health

Mobile and big data technologies are rapidly changing the way we think about and manage our money. It’s no surprise then that so called “fintech” startups have emerged as one of the hottest and most innovative technology sub-sectors, with financial technology firms securing more than $23 billion in venture capital and growth equity over the past five year. One of the entrepreneurs making noise in this booming industry is Brooklyn-based entrepreneur Byron Sorrells. After co-founding a startup called Healthcare Connect in 2009 and later working at Twitter, Sorrells opted to go the solo entrepreneur route with his new venture, Lemon — an automated financial assistant and money tracking software he launched in 2015. At its core, Lemon aims to inform people in a simple and straightforward fashion about their spending patterns across all their credit cards and bank accounts. The app tracks where users can save money and notifies them […]

When Her Brother Was Diagnosed With Diabetes, This Teen Launched A Startup to Help

Children living with diabetes deal with many daily struggles. They continuously have to monitor what they eat, check their blood sugar levels throughout the day, and safely inject themselves with insulin when necessary. Entrepreneur Emily Guertler, 15, hopes to lessen some of that burden through her small business called StraightShot Apparel. The Utah teen has created a line of stylish pants with adjustable zippers that make insulin injections more manageable for kids and their parents. “I remember thinking that I wish someone would come up with an easier way for my parents to manage my brother’s diabetes,” Guertler said in an interview. “I guess I just didn’t know that I could help.” The pants are hand-sewn and made exclusively for children. The zippers run along the thigh, making it easy to administer an insulin injection to the upper leg quickly and efficiently. The upper leg may seem like an odd […]

The 5 modern-day movies every entrepreneur should watch

Hollywood loves to recount the lives of famous entrepreneurs on the big screen, and the last few years have seen a steady stream of biopics that take a behind-the-scenes look at how contemporary innovators found success. In the process, these films often serve up helpful advice and a jolt of motivation for business leaders. Here are the top five movies entrepreneurs should watch for inspiration. Joy (2015) This biographical film is about New York-native Joy Mangano, who went from single mother to mop millionaire in the 1990s. She got her start by creating a new product called the Miracle Mop, a self-wringing mop that required less effort to use than its competitors. One of the most dramatic moments in the film is when Mangano, portrayed by Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, is devastated to learn that her mop is underperforming on home shopping network QVC and will soon be pulled. In […]

How one immigrant entrepreneur went from unemployed to D.C.’s taco king

Crowds regularly line up outside of District Taco, a chain of popular Mexican restaurants famous for its spicy cuisine. In fact, District Taco has become so well liked since the 2010 launch of its first restaurant in Arlington, Virgina that founders Mark Wallace and Osiris Hoil have opened seven locations in the neighboring D.C. metro area to keep up with demand. These days you could call them the D.C. Taco Kings. And in an area where food trucks and restaurants run aplenty, to be named the king of anything is quite an achievement. District Taco (or DT as fans lovingly call it)  has come a long way since its 2009 inception when Hoil would run the business from a standalone taco cart. He and his partner would later go on to set up their first brick-and mortar location after word-of-mouth about the business spread. Business is so good these days, […]

Startup mom: What it’s like running a small business with my 9-year-old daughter

Rozalynn Goodwin never dreamed she would be running a small business with her daughter. And she certainly didn’t expect it to happen before Gabrielle—Gabby to her friends and family—finished elementary school. So much for expectations. A few years ago, Goodwin, a healthcare executive, started to become frustrated with the run-of-the-mill clips she used on her then five-year-old daughter’s hair. By the time Gabby returned home from school at the end of each day, most of the clips were nowhere to be found. During one particularly frustrating braiding session, Gabby suggested that her mom should make her own barrettes instead of wrestling with store-bought brands. The idea struck a chord, and together, they began sketching out designs on the kitchen counter. In 2014, the mother-daughter duo officially launched GaBBY Bows and its signature product, what the Goodwins refer to as a “double-face, double-snap” barrette. It features two clips (instead of just […]
