President Obama was right to highlight the role that innovation plays in strong economies. Innovation and business success are closely linked. Established companies that do not innovate will lose market share to competitors that do. High-growth start-ups are built upon innovations that they want to force into the marketplace.

Immigration Author Kicks Off Chamber Series

The current immigration system of "arbitrary quotas" on visas has been a "disaster," and is hurting U.S. competitiveness at home and abroad, according to Jason Riley, the author of the book, "Let Them In: The Case for Open Borders." A free market system driven by the law of supply and demand would do a better job of addressing U.S. immigration needs than lawmakers and policy experts have, Riley said.

Future of Airline Industry Discussed at Chamber Summit

The heads of two U.S. airlines clashed over whether the industry should consolidate to counter soaring costs and stiffer competition during separate speeches at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's annual aviation summit on April 3.

Glenn F. Tilton, chairman, president and CEO of United Airlines and its parent company UAL Corp.,, said that "consolidation makes sense," particularly when foreign carriers are actively merging their assets. "Airlines are playing a vital role in creating a flatter world," Tilton told an audience of 175 government and business representatives.
