It appears that bake sales are the latest victim of overregulation. Schools across the country are banning the sale of nonnutritious foods as part of the fight against childhood obesity. Schools in California, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, and Texas limit bake sales to nutritious food. In Maryland’s Montgomery County, bake sales are not permitted during the day. Massachusetts goes a step further, banning children from handing out sugary treats to classmates on their birthdays.
