The news of the moment in the presidential campaign centers on entrepreneurs and how much credit they deserve for their success. [Read this post by U.S. Chamber Chief Operating Officer David Chavern.] I’ll leave the political back-and-forth to others. At least the discussion forces us to note entrepreneurs' important role in creating jobs.

Ryan Streeter, an economic policy expert at Indiana’s Sagamore Institute warns us that “entrepreneurship is declining in America, and job creation is suffering as a result.”  Current policies are holding back their job-creating ability.  He points out that the health care law and regulations costing nearly $2 trillion weigh down the ability of small businesses to grow.

There’s also the call by some leaders in Washington, like Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), to raise taxes even if it’ll cost jobs and lower wages.

Instead of talk about raising taxes, politicians need to tell us what they will do to reduce burdens on businesses and inspire the entrepreneurship needed to start new companies, create jobs, and spur growth.
