World Bank Group President Robert B. Zoellick is stepping down as he concludes his five-year term on June 30. He leaves a record of tremendous accomplishment.

“Bob Zoellick is one of the great statesmen of his generation,” said U.S. Chamber President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue. “He leaves the World Bank a stronger and better institution than he found it. It’s certain that whatever he does next, he will continue to make a tremendous contribution to the United States and to the world.”

With a laser-like focus on the Bank’s mission of boosting economic growth and overcoming poverty in developing countries, Zoellick oversaw a “record $247 billion of support in the key areas of infrastructure, the private sector, agriculture, social safety nets, education, health, and the environment,” according to the Bank.

He also oversaw the Bank’s first general capital increase in over 20 years — a cause the Chamber was pleased to support before the Congress last year.

Under Zoellick’s leadership, the World Bank focused on the important things. When world food prices surged several years ago, he helped marshal new resources and tools to address it. When the global financial crisis struck — causing trade finance to dry up — the Bank again stepped into the breach and helped avert a sharper downturn in global trade.

As Donohue said, whatever he does next, Zoellick’s contributions are sure to be remarkable.
