In honor of New York Knick Jeremy Lin’s spectacular rise to fame over the past week, Forbes contributor Eric Jackson put together a list of ten lessons we can learn from the basketball star that apply to the workplace. Some highlights for any business professional, entrepreneur, or chief executive to consider include:

  • Remain a team player through and through. Lin shares the ball and plays to the strengths of his fellow teammates. Despite the media and fan frenzy that has come to be known as “Linsanity,” Lin remains humble and never fails to give credit to his team for his successes.
  • Work hard and seize opportunities when they present themselves. One of three Harvard-educated athletes to make it to the NBA, Lin earned his spot on the Knicks’ roster with an exceptionally strong work ethic and perseverance. Until a few days ago, Lin had been sleeping on his brother's couch while he awaited a contract. With several teammates out due to injury, Lin seized the opportunity to shine, earning himself a spot on the starting lineup.
  • Be original. Jackson writes, “Lin isn’t Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant.  He’s not a pure scorer.  He’s a passer and distributor – who can also score very well.” Rather than aspiring to be a second-rate version of another celebrated athlete, Lin understands his strengths and puts his talents to work. In other words, he’s not the next Michael Jordan, he’s the first Jeremy Lin.
  • Don't overlook talent that exists around you. For business owners, finding your Jeremy Lin may not require leaving the building. Be cautious of making assumptions about the talent on your team and think about what your staff might be capable of accomplishing if you take your blinders off.

Whether you’re running a multimillion dollar business or recently joined the workforce, Lin’s impressive behavior on the court can teach us all valuable lessons to become better professionals.
