Recruiting Gen-Y
Millennials, also known as Gen-Y, are likely to account for 75 percent of employees by 2025. With the upcoming workforce in mind, Millennial Branding and Identified.com analyzed 4 million Gen-Y Facebook profiles. Rieva Lasonsky, founder and CEO of GrowBiz Media, shares some instructive conclusions about employment trends and what those patterns mean for businesses looking to hire Gen-Y workers now and in the future.
- Most millennials choose smaller companies: Only 10% of Gen-Y workers have ever worked at a Fortune-500 company. Lasonsky writes, “They work where they can play a bigger role and have more of an impact on the company.”
- Millennials are starting their own companies en masse: According to their Facebook profiles, “owner” is the fifth most popular job title for Gen-Y workers.
- Gen-Y employees won’t stick around if they are unsatisfied with their work: The average millennial spends just two years working at his or her first job.
Lasonsky says that business owners looking to recruit and retain millennials should make them feel valued in the workplace and give them opportunities to progress:
"The solution is to let them be “intrapreneurs” within your company. Put them in charge of their time by offering flex-time and remote work schedules. Give them a challenge and let them figure out how to handle it. Then, give them both positive and negative feedback on how they did.
