Big Game Brings in Big Money

Feb 6, 2012

For the Super Bowl, most people think about getting together with friends, wearing their team’s apparel, and choosing their favorite commercials. What they may not think about is the economic impact of their celebrations. Whether it’s a flag for the front porch, an extra large pizza, or a brand new TV, Super Bowl spending is as big as the game itself. This year’s game-watcher forked over even more money than last year’s, according to a recent poll.

A survey from the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association found that the average viewer spent $63.87 on Super Bowl merchandise and munchies, nearly $5 more than last year. Overall Super Bowl spending is expected to top $11 billion.

While the teams’ population-dense hometowns may have factored into this year’s increased numbers, consumer sentiment is at an 11-month high, which may translate to more Americans willing to splurge for the Super Bowl.
