Due to the tragedy in Arizona last weekend, the House has postponed its January 12 scheduled vote on legislation to repeal the health care reform law enacted last year.

The U.S. Chamber is leading the fight to repeal the job-killing health care law. In coordination with the Start Over! Coalition, the Chamber launched a pro-repeal ad campaign in the major Beltway publication Roll Call and on web site portals including AOL and Wall Street Journal Small Business. The campaign, which has drawn the support of hundreds of groups and businesses, calls on Congress to go back to the drawing board to craft commonsense health care reform that will control costs and not punish American workers and job creators.

On January 6, the Chamber hosted a members-only conference call with 550 small businesses and local chamber of commerce leaders to discuss the impending repeal legislation.

The new law imposes $569 billion in new and higher taxes on businesses and individuals and requires American businesses with 50 or more employees to offer "affordable" coverage to their employees or pay a stiff fine. Part-time employees are part of the calculation in determining the 50-employee threshold.

In addition, the law requires businesses to file 1099 IRS forms for all non-credit card, business-to-business transactions equaling $600 or more in a year, creating onerous data collection and paperwork burdens for small businesses and start ups.
