Gearing Up for the Elections
Chamber Web Site Offers Tools for Businesses
U.S. Chamber staff will register voters across the country for the 2008 elections.
The U.S. Chamber has launched an unprecedented, multifaceted voter education campaign focused on business issues in the 2008 elections and the candidates' positions on them.
"The choices voters make on November 4 will have a profound impact on the nation's prospects for greater prosperity and economic growth," according to Bill Miller, the Chamber's national political director and senior vice president, Political Affairs and Federation Relations. "The Chamber will ensure that voters have the material they need to make informed decisions."
The Chamber has significantly strengthened its five- year-old comprehensive grassroots legislative and political program, Vote For Business (VFB), to have a greater impact on this year's elections. Working closely with state and local chambers, the U.S. Chamber will use television, radio, direct mail, and phone banks to provide voters with information on where congressional candidates stand on key business issues. The organization will also deploy staff and volunteers to congressional districts and states where its pro-jobs, pro-growth message can influence the outcome in tight races. A Chamber bus will travel the country, registering voters and drawing attention to important races.
The focal point of the Chamber's election-related activities is its revamped voter education and get-out-the-vote Web site, VoteForBusiness.com. As an online destination for issue education, grassroots advocacy, and political involvement, this site has steered its focus toward candidates and elections.
Users can register to vote, learn about voting early or by absentee ballot, and see how candidates voted. In addition, they can sign up to have customized content-in-depth candidate profiles, detailed race reports, current polling information, ballot measure updates, and political multimedia-delivered directly to them via e-mail. Further, trade associations, local chambers, and businesses can partner with the Chamber to have customized election Web sites created for their members or employees. During the 2006 elections, nearly 800 such sites were built.
