Chamber Sends Price-Gouging Study to Congress

Jun 30, 2007

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has sent a report to Congress that provides hard facts against allegations of gasoline "price gouging," antitrust violations, and consumer exploitation by the oil industry.

The report, A Dozen Facts You Should Know About Antitrust and the U.S. Oil Industry, analyzes current market data as well as the results of investigations by the Federal Trade Commission. The report concludes that price increases are in fact based on market forces; and warns that price gouging rules and other laws meant to lower prices would actually harm, rather than benefit, consumers. The report also dissects other constructive legislative alternatives that really would benefit consumers, such as removing constraints on supplies.
