Chamber Applauds Supreme Court Free Speech Decision
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce applauded last week's Supreme Court decision protecting grassroots lobbying from unconstitutional government restrictions on broadcasting issue ads.
Wisconsin Right to Life, Inc. sued the Federal Election Commission for the right to run a series of issue ads urging residents to contact their senators to oppose judicial filibusters. In a 5-4 ruling, the Court overturned a key portion of the 2002 McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform laws that forced a broadcasting blackout 30 days before a primary and 60 days before the federal elections. The law had prevented advocacy groups from using the names of legislators who also happened to be candidates in ads designed to influence votes on issues pending before the legislature.
