"Card Checkmate"
Great editorial by that title in today’s Wall Street Journal (subscription required), about the ballot initiatives in four states -- Arizona, South Carolina, South Dakota and Utah -- that will guarantee the right to a secret ballot in union organizing elections. What a concept. Along the way, it mentions that "In 2007, legislatures in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Oregon enacted card check laws" that allow for coercion over democracy, "that were signed by Democratic governors." And so the initiatives in the four states are all the more welcome, for battling back against the tide, and in favor of democracy. It still seems incredible that in 2010 we’d be fighting a battle for the principles of democracy here in the US of A. But such are the vagaries of the political winds. Here’s hoping the forces of democracy will win over the forces of coercion on Election Day in four very important states.
