Promoting Engagement With Cuba

Maria Medrano has an op/ed in The Hill on the need to get U.S.-Cuba policy right:

This week, Cuba announced the release of 6 more political prisoners bringing the total released in the last month-and-a-half to 32.  This move follows reports that the Obama Administration will announce plans to expand the scope of legal travel to Cuba.  Combined with legislation in Congress to lift the travel ban and ease agricultural exports and policy briefs supporting all these moves, these latest developments indicate we are on the brink of changing our strategy toward Cuba. 

...In a letter sent this week to House Foreign Affairs Committee members, the U.S. Chamber urged a mark-up of H.R. 4645 because getting U.S-Cuba policy right matters. It will send a signal to the wider world about American values and how their influence can help shape a brighter future for the Cuban people.  It is time for American citizens to act as ambassadors of freedom, democracy, free markets, and free enterprise and begin to permeate Cuban society to support a transition to democracy and full civil liberties.
