Union America vs. The Voter

Jan 29, 2010

Not that there is much "Union America" -- outside the public sector anyway -- but I'll stick with the title. Sen. Chuck Schumer (this guy) has scheduled a Senate Rules and Administration Committee hearing for next Tuesday entitled "Corporate America vs. The Voter: Examining the Supreme Court's Decision to Allow Unlimited Corporate Spending in Elections." (h/t PointOfLaw) Well, ok then.  Let's do some "examining."

Here is a list of the top twenty "Top All-Time Donors,1989-2010" courtesy of OpenSecrets.org Heavy Hitters list:

Note: the above tilt is by "All Time" being from 1989 to date.  If we view the tilt by "2010 Cycle" we get:

That is one lonely elephant. And a clear lesson for Goldman and Citigroup: one or two donkeys won't cut it. For a real seat at the table you need to get that third one. It should also be noted that the First Amendment protections afforded in the Citizens United decision also apply to labor unions and others as well. While I fully support the decision; I just can't cotton to the hypocrisy of the response.
