"Buy American" Strikes Again
Unfortunately Congress decided to include "Buy American" requirements in the Jobs Bill that is on the House floor today. Despite all the negative consequences of the "Buy American" requirements in the Recovery Act, Congress still has proceeded to include these counterproductive measures in the bill. We should not be including job-killing requirements on a job-creation bill.
We sent this Coalition letter opposing the “Buy American” language today with many other business groups. There remains strong opposition to these job-killing requirements, which also cause great consternation and potential retaliation abroad.
As we have mentioned before, we released a study in September that found the cost of “Buy American” rules in the Recovery Act is substantial and if foreign governments lock U.S. companies out of just 1% of their own stimulus spending, the net U.S. job loss could surpass 170,000.
Let’s all hope Congress sees the writing and red tape on the wall and removes these Buy American mandates from any final Jobs bill. Here’s hoping logic prevails on this round.
