The NY Times Behind the 8-Ball

Oct 3, 2009

Tom posted on this earlier in the week, that same day I sent the below letter to Andrew Rosenthal, Editorial Page Editor for the New York Times. It has yet to run.

Dear Mr. Rosenthal:

Your September 30 editorial, ‘Way Behind the Curve,” got it wrong, plain and simple. The U.S. Chamber supports legislation to address the risks of climate change. What we won’t support are proposals that will undermine our already fragile economy and destroy jobs.

Legislation like Waxman-Markey and ill-advised schemes like EPA regulation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions under the Clean Air Act face growing opposition from both sides of the aisle—not to mention the American people—because they are unworkable, unrealistic, and would hurt the economy. The U.S. Climate Action Partnership has not endorsed the Waxman-Markey bill and even President Obama and EPA Administrator Jackson say they prefer legislation rather than applying existing environmental statutes that were not created to regulate GHG emissions.

The U.S. Chamber and the millions of businesses it represents aren’t behind the curve on climate change, but our economy and jobs will be behind the 8-ball if we pass bad legislation.

Sincerely,

David Chavern
