Small Business, Health Reform, and Costs

Oct 29, 2009

Today I had the opportunity to listen to the President speak on health care. My first impression was that he understood the reason I was there. I am a small business owner in Illinois, my company, Edwards Creative Services, is a small graphic design company with fewer than ten employees. Because of our size we cannot find affordable health care for our staff.

In his speech, President Obama addressed this concern briefly. He indicated that the current proposed legislation would enable us to provide adequate health insurance at reasonable costs. I wonder, though, at what overall cost.

I wonder if I understood him completely about very small businesses not carrying a heavy financial burden to accomplish this. He made it clear that none of this reform comes for free, but as small as our business is, every expense can feel like an enormous burden. This is true whether it comes with a health care, through increased taxes, or otherwise. I felt fortunate to be at the event today and am eager to learn more regarding the current bills of the table.
