Mexican Truckers File Suit
From the AP, as noted by Carter Wood:
Mexican truckers have filed a lawsuit against the United States seeking $6 billion in compensation for losses they claim to have suffered since Washington banned them from crossing the border in violation of a trade pact, an attorney said Tuesday.”
Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and Mexico’s Secretary of Economy Gerardo Ruiz Mateos at the Commerce Department yesterday. From the Commerce news release: "Regarding Mexican concerns over NAFTA trucking, Secretary Locke reiterated his support for a permanent and NAFTA-consistent solution to this issue, stating 'the Administration is committed to finding a timely resolution through legislation for a new program that addresses legitimate congressional concerns and satisfies our NAFTA obligations.'"
More details on the issue and why the U.S. needs to keep its word with Mexico from Adrean Rothkopf:
"The danger posed by this action is even larger than our remarkable trade ties to Mexico. Simply put, the U.S. has refused to keep its word. How can we call on other countries to meet their obligations under trade agreements if we refuse to meet our own? In the midst of a sharp economic downturn, with protectionism rearing its ugly head around the globe, the U.S. should lead by example. As the world’s largest exporter, the prospect of raising trade barriers poses a greater threat to the U.S. than any other country."
