As we head into February here are some of the stories BCLC followed in January:

Massive economic development: Kroger Co. plans to invest $75 million in "a massive economic development initiative" in the Fort Wayne, IN area.

Steadfast companies: A number of companies see corporate responsibility as all the more important given the financial crunch, even as they reduce spending elsewhere in their businesses.

Sustainable companies: Baxter and others were recently profiled in the book Green Biz: 50 Green, Profitable Companies Reveal Their Strategies and Successes.

Wall St. boot camp: New York City will help laid-off Wall Streeters switch industries by training them for new jobs and will work with foundations to set up boot camps for entrepreneurs

Supercomputer and energy: World Community Grid, an IBM project, announced its 11th new project: "The Clean Energy Project," in conjunction with Harvard researchers.

Leadership change: John Tedstrom takes lead at the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria

Inform, empower: As part of a change in its international-development work, Google.org seeks to improve developing nations by organizing vital information and making it accessible to the public.

Ethiopia and trade: Ethiopia launched an American Chamber of Commerce on January 13 to enhance trade and investment between Ethiopia and the United States.
