A Stern Response

Jan 10, 2009

It is presented a priori that Labor = labor. That is, Big Unions represent American labor as a whole and are solely interested in policies which benefit workers. An item, buried on A5, in the Washington Post today shows, again, that empirically this is not the case:

The board of the country's fastest-growing union, the Service Employees International Union, voted Friday to break up a large Northern California local at odds with the union's influential president, Andy Stern, ratcheting up labor division at a time when unions have high hopes for their agenda.

It should be noted that Sal Rosselli, president of the local in question, is no union sell-out. Rosselli argues Stern:

has conceded too much to politicians and employers in his push to grow the union

Glenn posted on the battle earlier this year and details of Rosselli's fight against Stern's "growth at any cost" approach can be found at seiuvoice.org.  Here is a recent headline from the site: "UHW Workers say 'NO' to Phony Election 92% Boycott SEIU's 'Catch 22' Vote"

Good for them, we also say "No" to a SEIU phony election scheme: card check.  You should too.
