Lawsuit Abuse and Nevada

Aug 19, 2008

The Henderson Chamber of Commerce sure knows how to mobilize an active small business community! About 100 Henderson Chamber members attended a breakfast this morning to hear a presentation on protecting yourself against and curbing lawsuit abuse.

We had the opportunity to not only attend a great event, but also to meet a lot of small business owners who were very concerned about the current state of our legal system. A legal system so bogged down by frivolous lawsuits that it denies access to legitimate grievances and hinders the ability for small businesses - and our country - to compete. Unfortunately, we got to hear first hand from the Henderson business community about their own experiences with abusive lawsuits.

In addition to the legal seminar, the members were on hand as Dick Castner, who heads our Western Regional offices, presented Rep. Jon Porter with a Spirit of Enterprise award. The Spirit of Enterprise award is the acknowledgment we give to every member of the House and Senate -regardless of party- who votes in favor of pro-growth policies and laws at least 70% of the time on the key issues each legislative session. In Congressman Porter's case we know he understands what small business owners go through to stay in business because he was once a small business owner himself.

The vast majority of people attending boarded and toured the Bandwagon and joined thousands of other business activists, via VoteForBusiness, to fight for good and sound economic and public policy in Washington.

Nevada ranks 40th among all fifty states in the fairness of its litigation environment, as reflected in the Institute for Legal Reform's yearly ranking of the best and worst legal climates.  We are on to California, ranked 44th, so we definitely have work to do.  Find out where your state ranks.
